Poll finds most Florida voters support legalizing cannabis and expanding medical access

Yet another new poll finds a majority of Florida voters support ending cannabis prohibition. The statewide survey of 590 voters was conducted this month by Public Policy Polling and commissioned by Florida for Care. It found 59% of state voters would support legalizing cannabis for adult use, while just 31% would be opposed.

Other statewide polls have also found majority support for legalization, including surveys conducted in fall 2019 by University of North Florida Public Opinion Lab and St. Leo University Polling Institute.

The survey also found most state voters (58%) support expanding access to cannabis for medical purposes, while only 15% would like to see new restrictions added to the program. Most voters (58%) are specifically opposed to proposals currently under consideration in the Legislature that would limit potency levels of medical cannabis. The survey also found support for allowing medical use has grown to 76% since voters approved Amendment 2 with 71% in 2016.

Florida Politics reports:

“This confirms what anybody paying attention at all knows,” said Ben Pollaraexecutive director of Florida For Care. Floridians across party lines and in huge numbers support medical marijuana, and by almost a 4-to-1 margin, people want more access to medical marijuana versus new restrictions like the THC caps the Legislature is proposing.”

And there’s a true distaste for politicians deciding how much dope is too much. More than three in five respondents agreed that limiting THC is “just another way for Tallahassee politicians to try and ignore the will of Florida voters.”
